INSTITUT FÜR KOGNITIVE NEUROLOGIE UND DEMENZFORSCHUNG

A PhD position funded by the EU Joint Programme

A PhD position funded by the EU Joint Programme – Neurodegenerative Degenerative Research (JPND) is available from April 1st 2021 at the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg.

Topic:

The PhD student will be part of a multidisciplinary international consortium investigating the role of neuromelanin in neurodegeneration and neuronal dysfunction in aging and Parkinson’s disease (PD). The project will use longitudinal neuromelanin-sensitive MRI, fMRI and CSF biomarkers to determine the relationship between increased neuromelanin signal intensity and neuronal function in the locus coeruleus and substantia nigra in aging. The project will involve close collaboration with Prof Lehericy (Paris) to merge MRI findings with those observed in PD-related mutation carriers and with our cooperation partners Dr Prigge (Magdeburg) and Dr Villa (Barcelona) using comparable imaging modalities in neuromelanin-producing rodent models in addition to numerous collaborators at the University of Magdeburg.

The requirements for the position are:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in psychology, neurosciences, medical engineering or related field
  • programming skills in MatLab, Python or shell
  • knowledge of relevant statistical analyses and programs such as SPSS, R, SPM or equivalent
  • experience working with longitudinal data e.g. MRI/neuropsychological data

Position:

The PhD position will be supervised by Dr. Matthew Betts and will be associated with the IKND (http://www.iknd.ovgu.de/en/) at the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg headed by Prof. Emrah Düzel. Payment will be according to German E13 TV-L (65 %) for 3 years. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply before the 22nd of January 2021

Magdeburg is a vibrant and multidisciplinary scientific environment offering a broad range of opportunities for cutting-edge cognitive neuroscience, including multiple MRI scanners (3 and 7T), MEG and EEG laboratories. The Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg is trying to increase the number of women in science. Therefore, women are explicitly encouraged to apply and will be given preference in employment. Handicapped applicants will be preferred when equally experienced.

Please send your application (CV, cover letter and references  – preferably in a single PDF file) – to matthew.betts@dzne.de. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
